Dogs are like people in the fact that they can suffer from contact and inhalation allergies. In a dog who is sensitive to flea bites, all it takes is one flea and they begin scratching.
A dog can be allergic to ingredients in food, grass, pollen or they can be allergic to carpet fibers, the shampoo you bathe him in or cigarette smoke.
The thing is...once they start to scratch, it causes their body to realease histamines and those make the itching worse.
How can you know if it is an allergy, if he's scratching and licking, you need to take him to a vet to determine what the agent is that is causing the itching.
Your vet can give him an injection to stop the scratching and an Rx for an antihistamine.

I have a cocker spaniel and I thought he had fleas from his continuous scratching I took him to the vet and he had allergies so I would say by his scratching. They can also have what they call a cough which sounds like a deep cough and that is another simptom of allergies. I was told to give my dog Robittussin straight just a tablespoon full and it quit the cough. I hope this helped, if not see your local vet.Thanks.

Dogs get allergies just like humans. Scratching, sneezing, loss of skin, lack of shine to the coat, all indicate problems.
Bit the bullet and take your dog to a vet who can test for allergies. The medication is either pills like humans take and/or shots. The shot medication you buy in six month stock is not cheap. But how do you put a price on the dog you love! Right?

Some dogs are more allergic to flea bits than others. A skin allergy the dog usually looses their fur and the skin will get thick and sometimes it will look like sweat and there is an Oder.
