You have a moral responsibility to care for your wife and son.

Seek the truth where you are because the truth cannot be found by looking outward. The truth is found within through careful meditation.

As long as you leave them enough cash to live on until your son is 18 after that your wife is on her own. Since I doubt you will ever find Lord Buddha you will probably be searching for the rest of your life you might as well just divorce your wife before you go so she can find a real man to be a father to your son. Little boys need a father around , someone to teach them things and play ball with. With all the different churches around I dont see why you would have to leave home to find religion. I think you are just looking for a way out of your responsibilites.

No .. if their wordly needs is not taken care of .

Before you leave your family to search for the ultimate truth , you will have to at least make sure that your family will be free from any financial problems . This is to make sure that your family can continue to move on without your presence .

In this world , financial security is everything . So , make sure that you can manage to provide them the basic necessity of life such as shelter , clothing , and money .

Then , after you have fulfill your responsibility , then , you may start to leave a life of simplicity and practice what you think is right . However , do not leave the house once you have made up that decision . Start to get involved in the sangha world but still live in your own home . When times come , your family will accept your decision and not hate it .

If now u planned to leave the house , then your own family might hate Buddhism as well . So , dont make this a problem to both party . Take well care of their welfare and you , in the end will get what you want to achieve in your life without much trouble and objections .

The Scriptures say that "if you seek the Lord with all your heart, He will be found by you" and these are the very words of God. If you are truly seeking the Lord with your whole heart and cry out to Him to help you, He will meet you just where you are. You won't have to go anywhere, and He would most likely want your family to come to Him in their hearts too.
When you seek God with your whole heart you will find Him. Problem is: some people seek something else, other than God. Ask yourself why do you want to leave and do this? As yourself if your are seeking God or something else? It's healthy to ask oneself these things, I remember doing it myself years ago.

are you running to something or running from something? almost all spiritual practices demand that you truly and completely explore, take personal inventory, and take care of your own realm before deciding to turn towards the external. God isnt "out there", but in your heart and all around you and in the love you have for your family and the works you can do for community. better to practice and study and apply your learnings to the life you already have. if you believe in the teachings of Buddha, you have to believe that you are in the life you are in to learn specific lessons, that there is a purpose to the life you live and that you actually chose it as part of your personal evolution. so in reality, you'd be abandoning this priviledge of these learnings if you turned from them to pursue some sort of pilgrimage.

Maybe you should discuss this with your wife and son first. It's probably better not to leave them and try to search for truth from your own home!

buddha's not a lord. maybe you should search for truth at home first, and then if you still need more, you can go abroad.

And will your family be taken care of while you're gone searching? Will they have food, shelter, will their bills be paid? If you can answer yes to these questions, then you should be good. The only thing you have left is whether or not they will miss you, and you them.
