State prison is different from state to state. So a poorer state has a pretty rough prison system. Like in Mississippi there is no A/C and it is HOT in the summer. The inmates work in the fields and there is little medical care for them. Their prison clothing, sheets, etc are of poor quality to non-existent. Perhaps a state like New York would be better but I doubt it.

Federal prison is much more lush. There is good food, lots of clothing and medical care and A/C. There is also a work-out room, a library, etc.

Bank robbery, kid-napping, sex crimes, counterfeiting are federal offenses. Other infractions are punished on the state level, depending on which state you are convicted in.

You go to a federal prison for committing federal crimes. State prison handles state offenses. Some federal prisons are more severe, like the Super Max prisons, particularly the one in Colorado, the worst of the worst go there. On TLC they had a show about the prison system and one inmate said that Super Max in Colorado was used as a threat for unruly inmates and it is the end of the line.

Federal prisons are reserved for those convicted of federal crimes in a federal court. So called "normal" prisons are for those convicted on the state/local level.

Well, depending on what law one broke, federal prison may be "normal prison." A criminal convicted of a federal crime goes to federal prison; one breaking a state crime goes to state prison. Breaking a county ordinance could get one in county jail.
