I don't think the person asking the question is referring to a gas operated pistol... I believe they're talking more like a M-79 grenade launcher (aka. a thump gun) firing riot control or CS agents. The newer M203 grenade launcher is also capable of firing the same riot control agents. Of course there are a hundred variations of these weapons used by almost every military in the world. I understand that some law-enforcement agencies around the world are playing with a similar concept using 12 or 10 guage shotguns that fire a Riot Control cartridge. I would not call such a device a pistol however, but I suppose it could be reduced in size to approximately 12 inches or so. (about 30 cm) and could be confused for a "pistol"

I'm guessing the term "gas pistol" was heard on a television or radio report and used by some reporter who didn't know any better about these sort of things...

I have no clue what sort of ammo these folks would use, but if they are law enforcement I suppose (and I'm going out on a limb here) that the situation would dictate what they are using. Indonesia is a relatively modern country and would more likely than not have access to such less than lethal weapon systems... now under what circumstances they would employ it??? I dunno...

Gas operated means that the firearm uses propellant from a cartridge unload a spent shell and load a new one each time it fires, it is equal to semi-automatic.
