i just bought a used-road bicycle, and a friend of mine recommended that i take it to the shop to get it tuned up and looked over... i plan on doing it... but i want to know what all a tune-up usually entails.

Most important part is truing the wheels and tesioning the spokes, other than that its pretty much clean and lube...

Get a bike maintenance book from the library. Do it yourself. A tune up consists of cleaning and lubing the drive chain (easy to do with a toothbrush, some degreaser, and some bike specific lube, checking the adjustments on the cables (brakes and derailleurs), which is something you can do easily. Check the wheels and spoke tension, check the tire pressure. With a few tools, and the book, you can do all this yourself.
If you are going to own a bike, it is much better to learn how to care for it yourself. Then you will feel more in tune with it as you ride, and will learn how to diagnose problems on your own. Some things you do need to go to the shop for. But many things can be done on your own.
