I don't think it was developed as an actual ant killer, but I do know a chap buys large amounts of Equal and changes the packaging and uses it as an ant killer. It does work, it also kills mice, and it takes less than an eighth of a small packet to kill one mice. Aspartame is a highly toxic substance, so why do doctors prescribe artificial sweeteners to diabetics?

Aspartame is a small protein containing phenylalanine.
I haven't heard of it being developed as an ant killer. The sweetness aspect is an incidental finding since it stimulates the sour sensors to taste sweet.

Oh, PLEASE!! It was NOT DEVELOPED AS A TOXIN OF ANY SORT!!
That's an Urban legend, and completely bogus.
Here's the development history: http://www.elmhurst.edu/~chm/vchembook/549aspartame.html

Yes it was part of pesticide research, a accidental tasting showed it was very sweet and the rest is history including my wife's lymphoma that I attribute to her drinking of copious amounts of diet soda as a youth.

It was developed to rub on areas that were painful such as knee, shoulders, elbows, etc. I found it never worked for me. I just take motrin or advil.
