Atrocious spelling is due to laziness and nothing else. My father had very poor spelling skills, but he would always ask someone to correct his spelling. People have become lazy, using abbreviations and short cuts instead of learning to type. I generally refuse to chat with anyone who can't type a complete word.

I think it's mostly because of text messaging and chat rooms. People learn to use internet shorthand and it gets out of hand!

And sadly, some people just do have dismal spelling skills.

As for being in a hurry, speaking for myself, if I see a mistake I made, I will go back and correct it right away.

I spell really well, but sometimes I will switch a couple letters.
I can read a mixed word and know what it means.

HOWEVER, I cannot figure out what some people say, because they just don't spell correctly and I don't know why they do it!

I think some people really can't spell, the same way some people aren't good with numbers.

I think it's both. Some people just don't like to be good spellers, or don't have a choice in the matter.
