It's a double edge sword, speaking from experience as an 8 year Marine veteran. I know the guys need to feel validated for their hard work and sacrifice, but it's something you live with when you take that oath. You do not do it for fame or glory, or media attention. They do it because out there some where tonight there's a small child or mother or father that cannot defend themselves, they depend on us, they pray for us to save them, and protect them from harm. Personally for me, the smile I see on a young child's face is more than enough validation. Or to see the tears of a mother and father dry up because we saved them from certain doom.

As former military I support the troops without question. I believe in their mission, and their ability. What I can tell you is that the average soldier does not concern himself/herself with what the news is reporting. Instead they are focused on completing the mission. The news media is lost in this country. It doesn't matter left or right, both sides report what is favorable to agenda they support. We have to be exposed to the bad, but we should also hear the good. When bad things are done in the name of the American people, the people have a right to know, and demand punishment for those responsible. The problem with constant negative reporting is that it hurts our image in the world, because there is no good to balance it out. Make no mistake the majority of media is antiwar, this began with Vietnam. The media is still fighting that war even though the vast majority of the American public has moved on. If you want to do something positive, walk up to a soldier, or send an mail, let them know that you are behind what they are doing, and appreciate their sacrifice. Believe me this one simple actions can counter dozens of bad news stories in the eyes of our fine men and women serving the country in uniform.

I have a boyfriend in the military and a father who was on tv for a long time. In Media "If it bleeds it leads" Media outlets are SUPPOSED to remain unbiased, but its obvious they don't. In terms of the soldiers getting attention, in MY opinion, the soldiers who are shown doing bad things in the media will get punished by military law anyway, the media just chooses to exploit their wrongdoings. The soldiers themselves don't care about the media attention....its not what they signed up for...They know they're doing a good thing and that the people who aren't living to the highest military standard will be taken care of...If it satisfies you, all the soldiers I know are above average American citizens and they've enjoyed serving in Iraq and helping the situation over there...hope I gave you some insight

Humans are just like that. We find the good stuff boring and we just eat the bad stuff right up.
I don't think media attention is good for the soldiers who risked their lives. They don't need attention. What they need is to be honored and we already have plenty of "honors" and such for the said soldiers.

We need a balance of both - the good and the bad. The media always tends to focus on the bad. When's the last time you turned on the news and heard about someone having a baby, unless it was 5 or 6 of them? Or heard about the local flower show? Not likely. But you will hear about the murder, rape, child molesting and general mayhem going on in the world. Like I said, we need a balance.

I totally agree with you ... unfortunately the press is one sided... they are only interested in reporting negative information even if its not substantiated..they do not want to report anything that will reflect good on our country ...armed forces ...or our president... the media for the most part is run by biased liberals uninterested in reporting all sides of news... only in what furthers their point of view... there is no sensationalism in reporting that our soldiers are helping the citizens and that they appreciate our help over there... negative news sells more papers ....

So, they are doing it for the media now?
Provide examples of good things that happen at war? Do you want the news to report what they are writing to their sweethearts and moms?
The only good news that we could hear about any war is that it is over and that they are on their way back home.

If the media reported on the good they are doing the Republicans may get re elected.
Just wait if a Democrat gets elected all the good will be reported.

Of course the media isn't going to show all of the good. all they care about is the bad stuff because that is what gets everyone's attention.
