Birds like any other animal are a huge responsibility. Nobody can tell you to or not to get one. Just remember they have special needs.

Birds are very social animals, and like company. I am not fond of parakeets, but I have never owned one either, so I do not know much about them. I have a conure, and they are a little bit bigger then a keet. Generally, Conures have a longer lifespan then a keet also.

Before getting any bird, do your research about the species you are interested in. There are lots of rescue places that need help with birds also. They can help you with specific questions you might have.

If you are still wanting a parakeet, you will need a cage, that is the right size for the bird (too small they get depressed, too big they can get aggressive). You will need to know about their diet, and make sure they get all the fresh veggies, fruits and veggies that they need. Most birds do get bored easily, so I would suggest a few toys for them also.

Good luck with any bird you do adopt.

Personally, I have never had a bird but took care of a women once with one, and I just wanted to ask you - Are you absolutely sure that you want, and have the time to really care for a parakeet? Because they are a HUGE under-taking, bird feed gets all over the carpet, changing there cage is a mess, and well some days - they just won't stop. Plus, if it is going to learn to say things and do things that it is potentially capable of doing (it is proven they have the intelligence of a 2 to 3 year old) --- that requires a lot of time, patience, and know how.

Maybe take some time to research on the Internet, library, or pet store specifically for exotic birds to finding out everything you need to know about having a parakeet before you whip out the serious cash that is a must for 1.) the bird 2.) the stuff to maintain a healthy bird.

I would so hate for you to rush into that kind of responsibility just because you want one, and finding out later that you have one huge investment that is driving you NUTS!

Please do NOT get a bird before you do your research!

Birds are tricky pets that require ALOT of attention and home modification.
Because a bird's anatomy is soo different from us, and other pets, they have different requirements. You may need to throw out all your pots and pans, cleaning chemicals, etc etc etc (these can be toxic).

Aside from that, birds are highly intelligent and require constant stimulation. So, dont think your bird will be happy, or live a good life confined in a cage 24/7.

It is difficult, and more expensive, to find health care for birds - they require specialty vets.

If you do decide to get a bird, make sure it was not caught in the wild, or imported from another country (you will have to research that info). You will want a bird that is hand raised.
make sure you purchase a QUALITY cage, that has more than adequate room, research the bird's diet (contrary to popular belief, seeds are actually UNHEALTHY for birds). Get a quality book on how to care for parakeets. make sure there is a good spot in your home for the bird (research on how to select this spot).

I know the bird, itself, is fairly inexpensive... but cages are expensive, toys are expensive (and YES they need LOTS of toys), and I already mentioned health care.

Parakeets live for 20 years or so, I hope you are ready for that comitment!

If you purchase a parakeet - make sure you have a cage wide enough for the bird to spread his wings out from side to side, you will need seed and or pellet for keet, cuttle bone, mineral block,
cage cleaner, a couple of toys for that size of bird and preferably spray millet. Keep cage and toys cleaned out regularly 2-3 times weekly- keep candles and sprays away from bird, do not cook with teflon, keep toxic plants away from birds reach, keep wings clipped and watch you other pts in home....

You need to get a few books on parakeet care from the library first and read each one carefully BEFORE you get the bird.

Use the internet to do a search on "Parakeet care" and read many websites as well to learn.

first thing, do not get one until you have purchased a book on how to take care of them. all birds get respiratory problems very easily. they need to follow a strict diet or they will DIE. budgies are great little birds. buy them very young, make sure you get from a knowledgable store like petsmart. or, maybe in your area you have a store that sells nothing but birds?? when you do get your BABY bird, make sure you keep wings clipped to protect him from hitting windows or flying out the door. make sure you are willing to dedicate a lot of time to your little bird because they need a lot of attention. the more time you spend with him, the more he will love you. it does take alot of patience at first, expect to get a few bites or two in the beginning. good luck

Parakeets are nice pets, but you do need to take care of them everyday. You need to feed them and give them water. The cage should be cleaned often and if you are only getting one, you need to talk to him/her everyday. I have two parakeets. I would highly recommend getting a male bird. Here is a really good website that has lots of information about parakeets.

Parakeets are nice pets, but just like any pet, you need to have the time to dedicate to them. Good luck with your choice!
