If you’re a sound guy, Onkyo makes a really killer unit for entry-level users. The HT-R8230 is a powerful receiver who's only flaw is in its video options (Composite only). It is one of the better receivers that I have heard in the under 2000 category. It really is a great sounding unit, and you can get it in a home theater in a box package for $300. The package includes a well-designed powerful subwoofer and neodymium speakers. I liked this package so much I bought it for my girlfriend when she asked me what she should get for her home theater. I am an audio engineer and I stand by this brand. They don’t have the distortion or tinny metal sound of Denon’s; they are more reliable then Pioneer’s, and they sound better then Yamaha’s. If you want to spend a little more, check out Harmon-Kardon, that’s what I use in my home theater. Onkyo is my other favorite brand.
If you’re a video guy, a Yamaha RX-V459 is a nice receiver. It has component inputs, and actually sounds pretty good. I found it for about $250 at my local electronics store.
I hope this was helpful.

Anything but Sony the one I have is PURE JUNK
The Bose Lifestyle 28 I replaced it with is AWSOME but anything but budget.
Save until you can get something better...trust me you're wasting your $$$ on budget units.
