Ive never seen an explanation of how many are in a typical company, how many company's per regiment etc. I want to know what the current make up of the U.S. military is like & how that compares to the Civil War, a period where you read a lot about companies, regiments & brigades. Also I want to know all the ranks for each branch of the military. How do they compare with each other (what is comparable in rank between branches) How have they changed over the years? Is there a good site with a chart of ALL ranks so I can see & compare them? I hear things like E3, Spec. 4 etc. I'm not military so I have no clue what people mean. What are their typical duties, etc. I know this is a lot to ask but my dad runs a military surplus store & I work for him part time & I'm often clueless so it would be nice if I knew some more details & plus Id just like to know for my own benefit, especially how today compares to the era of the Civil War which is my favorite period of history. Thanks!

Thanks to those whove responded so far. All I'm interested in is the make up of the units such as size which I seem to have several answers for already. I'm not looking to become a scholar of military history. I just decided to ask the question while searching for a picture of D-Day to use for my fantasy football league (D-Day = Draft Day). Ive always been curious as to the break down of numbers though. Now to just find a site that has all the ranks I can view & how the ranks of each branch compare to each other. If anyone can tell me how the military make up has changed since the early days of the country I'd appreciate that too but I suspect that may be more in depth than I'm looking for. If anyone has the abbreviated version though I'd be interested.

Squad is the smallest unit in the military.
A squad is made up of three to ten men
Platoon is about three squads
Company is about three platoons
Regiment is about three company's
Battalion is about threee Regiments
Division is about thre Regiments
Army is set up of Divisions.
It gets much more complex then that. But a general look. Get the book. Pentagon for Dummies.
Ranks
2nd LT. 1 bronze bar
LT. 1 bar
Capt. 2 bars
Major Bronze Oak leave
LT. Colonel Black or Silver Oak Leave
Colonel Black or silver Bird
Brigadier General 1 star
Major Gen 2 Star
Lt. Gen 3 Star
General 4 Star
General of the Army 5 Star

Some changes since the civil war. Mostly with Divisions and the independence of Battalions. But most of that is complex.

Now for starters the size of a company depends on what type of company it is. it goes like this from smallest to largest OK you have a team, squad, platoon, company, battalion, brigade, division, Corps and higher up it goes you can go to some web sights like US Army.mil and as for the Civil war stuff goggle the 1st,2nd,3rd regiment's they have alot of cool history that most people dont know about. myself i'm affiliated wiTh the 7th Infantry regiment . Now also if you want to learn about the about the military study up on WWI and WWII because that's when the military was the biggest then there were alot of units back then. also check out the library .hope that helped a little
