Its a dangerous job, many of the people you serve do not appreciate your work nor understand the risks you take everyday.
The majority of the people you come in contact with are criminals or victims. Regardless of which group they fall in, when you are dealing with their situation it is one of the worst times in their life.
But when you can see that you have made a difference in the life of someone, even if you know its just for a moment, its worth it.
One night a male officer removed an infant from an abusive mother and father, but he didn't know how to care for her while waiting for DFS. Me being the only female on duty was called into the station to care for her. In that time frame when I held her and cared for her and I knew that she was not going to be hurt like that again; I knew thats why I do this.
Regarding the actual requirements to become a cop, check with some area agencies for their requirements. For the most part the age and physical requirements will probably be the same. Their education (college) or work experience may vary. Some agencies will hire you before going to the police academy and pay you and your tuition while you attend. Others require that you have already attended before applying.

Well that would take a lot of space...You need to be 21, you should be drug free, no felonies, no misdemeanors higher than a traffic ticket and you should not have many of those either. You should be a high school graduate or with a ged and 12 semester hours of college. Most larger departments require 60 hours of college, but they pay better than the smaller ones that dont require that. Where you work will decide about how good or bad your benefits are. You may want to try working in a correctional facility for a little while first before you try going to be certified as a patrolman as this is not a job for everyone.
You wont ever be rich, but you will almost always have a job. You will be overworked and underpaid, you will be hot in the summer time and cold in the winter. People will gripe to you constantly about their woes and problems and you will be expected to find a solution to those same problems. When you stop someone on traffic you will be accused of harrassing them, when you arrest somone for DWI you will be berated for not being out catching real criminals.
When you stop a dad or a boyfriend from beating their wife/girlfriend or children or all of the above there will not be any thanks and most likely they will be there to bail them out before you finish getting them booked in to jail.
When you stop at a store a child will almost always want to talk to you. When you stop at a stop sign most people will wave, some will even have all of their fingers extended...
In short, this is a great job for some but not for others. You have to really be interested in public service to do well in this job.
Good Luck.
