It's too high on one octave, and too low on the one below it. I end up having to sing harmony, and even that is just not on my key. I end up switching octaves throughout the song!

The average person only has an octave or octave and a half range. Guys can comfortably sing from a low A to maybe the D above middle C, for example; and in general, a woman has the same note range but an octave higher.

The melody line of the hymn has to somehow stay within that range if the congregation as a whole can comfortably sing it. Using parts instead of melody does help some -- people have learned to sing harmony parts when the melody line goes out of their natural range.

Worship leaders have to be careful with the key they pick, especially because many are talented singers and thus have a "wider" range than the average person in the congregation (as well as more musical background) and sometimes forget what difficulties the average person might experience in the chosen key.

When I lead, I try to set the key so that it falls as much as possible within the range I mentioned above.

It sounds like the keys you have to sing are really bad for you -- probably as far out of whack as possible, since you're constantly flipping octaves... depending on your musical background, can you sing a harmony part, or maybe learn one (for those songs at least)? That will at least help you be less frustrated.

i love to sing , w/o people around and i keep in key , but as soon as i get in church , i can't carry a note . the organists is either too fast or slow or the congregation always has one person who thinks if they sing loud enough they will sound good and that's when my pitch is gone .
