Now that you have discovered the rest of the world and have even taken a hand in its politics in judiciously selected areas, may we politely express the wish that you desist from using the habitually insular, Paris France, London England, Rome Italy and Madrid Spain? The odds that anyone in Europe would mistake these great capitals for some little US town West of Poughkeepsie are lametably low. For our part we will recognise that you are indeed, Americans and only a few of you are Yankers.

It is for the benefit of American users that people include the country name. Americans who live in Texas, Georgia, etc. have no reason to automatically assume the question is referring to European cities since they live right next to these cities.
Another possible reason is that most people assume the Europeans will be on a separate European Yahoo answers. There are so few of you on here that it is just easier to address the questions to an American audience.

Are you from Paris France, London England, or Rome Italy? I like London England.

Actually, they do it for a very practical reason. Many US placenames were imported by immigrants from Europe. When Americans ask each other from whence they hail, it is necessary to differentiate between, say, Paris, Idaho or Paris, Texas or Paris Kentucky or Paris Tennessee. They are very much in this habit and continue it in their conversations with foreigners.

Dear Ms. Thinskinned,

Take it down a thousand. Geez!

You ask for respect but then call us "Yankers." How is adding the country to describe a spot on this planet disrespectful? If that's all it takes to set you off then you've got too much time on your hands.

Signed,

Small-town-dweller-west-of-Poughkeepsie

If you think this statement is going to change anything, even a small remote part, you are dreadfully wrong and have no idea as to how this site functions.
