Go for a sports theme, you can do any sport, and this can grow as he does. If you have a favorite sports team, go with that, if not, just do basic sports... Little boys seem to like sports any way.

Something that can grow up with him, like road maps or his favorite sport. It's easy to adapt these themes for older kids and even teenagers as the child's interests change and develop. If you're not worried about that, I think a medieval knights theme would be awesome for a six year old.

I like a star/moon theme. You can use the glow in the dark stars for the ceiling and even the walls.
There are alot of astronaut or starry night themes and templates to choose from. If you stay away from specific characters and themes and go for a general theme, he won't grow out of it as quickly and you'll get more longevity out of the redecorating.

Boys at that age prefer something like a "HERO", such as Superman, Spider-man, Pokemon's, or Any other "HERO".
You could also use themes like Space, Military, Fleet, Wild Life.
You should know what fascinate your kid the most, and create something that he really enjoy.

fish are great! you can buy colorful fish/ocean themed items. When he wants to change his room theme you then have decorations you can use aroung the house or items that people would buy at a yardsaleor on e-bay.

Do airplanes...cover a wall with a big map...hang airplanes from the ceiling...buy curtains and decorate them with airplane buttons....buy an airplane border (vs wallpapering whole room)...paint walls blue and then sponge diluted white paint over them for a cloud/sky effect...
