What's the best way to learn to speak another language? I studied German for two years but can still barely speak anything beyond telling the time and ordering dinner.

What's the best way to become fluent in languages like Spanish and Italian?

The best way is to go to a country where they speak the language you want to learn. Many of my friends have done this, and they come back really knowing the language.

But, if you can't do this try talking to a native speaker on Skype. Not sure if you know the program, but you can talk to people all over the world for free through the computer. I've learned a lot that way.

Although I'm not actually fluent in Spanish, I'm considered good enough to be a tutor. Here are my tips: 1) If you don't already know a lot about the language, get Rosetta Stone. I concur that it is really expensive, but if you're sure that you really want to learn the language, it'll be helpful in getting down the basics. 2) After you've learned some from the Rosetta Stone, enroll in some community college classes in that language if possible. Get good reference books, and try to learn as much as you can. 3) By the time you get to the end of the 200 level in college classes (and if you really tried hard), you should be able to read the language pretty well. At this point, I'd have to recommend a trip to the country that speaks your language of choice. And I'm not talking about a two-day stay in Mexico city.... I mean a few months of immersing yourself in the language and culture. That's my approach; I've more or less followed the pattern through the beginning of step 3. You may have totally different learning style; I would recommend exploring and seeing what works best for you. Good luck!

I would tell that you have to start speaking with native people. Otherwise, it is extremely difficult.

Listening and speaking are the best ways to learn and use any language.

You should force yourself to speak in that language with those native speakers even if you have an option to converse in a different (say french or english) language.

The best way is just to study hard and to spend as much time as possible in that country because while your there, you have no option but to speak that language. Doing this would definitly increase your ability to speak that language, and you'd speak fluently. (just make sure u dont forget english lol)

I think immersion in the language and culture is the only way to really learn to speak as they speak.Text book Spanish doesn't work most times in Mexico,as it is Castillian and a lot of Mexico speak a sort of pigeon Spanish (no disrespect meant please don't blast me)
rather than true Spanish,Like we here in the USA speak a bastardized version of true English.

my cray cray spanish teacher said the only way to learn it fluently is to
1. move to a country that speaks the language
2. make sure you do not know anyone
3. avoid places where english is spoken (if it is at all) in the city
4. and try to live like the culture

i'm sure it's effective, but it's also kind of drastic
a lot of determination could also be just as effective

Watch tv or movies in the language you are learning. Also what I do is visit the different yahoo home pages from different countries to see how much I can understand.

You have to keep practicing. Talk to your parents or siblings if you have them around the house in the language. You can practice writing sentences and saying them out loud. Go to classes that are during the summer or at night colleges to practice.
