I'm studying medieval sword fighting, and practising is done using steel replicas of swords which are not sharp, but can still be very hazardous if something goes wrong. I don't have money for proper safety gear, and almost nobody uses it - we rely on stopping our blows before the blade makes contact with the sparring partner.

Do you think this is sensible?

. . . about as sensible as having sex with a stranger without a condom . . .

You are putting your safety and health in the hands on your sparring partner. No matter how good you are if your sparring partner is not that good with his/her control you will be the one to get hurt, possibility very badly. If you wanna keep doing this then save up for protective gear or at least have a good health insurance plan, and oh yeah a disability plan too, sooner or later you will probably need it if you keep doing your sword fighting with out protective gear.

Safety first.

If it is just a hobby do not risk your health but if it is a passion do what your heart tells you. But something tells me it is not a passion or you would not seek the approval of others.

I think what you are doing is foolish. Get some safety equipment.

I have, by mistake. The last time I was soldering a piece of stained glass, I had too much flux on the project. The solder bubbled and splashed hot solder into my eye. That was three months ago and I still have a red mark on my eyeball.

Of course! Taking martial arts is pretty much taking your life into your hands. A wrong strike or incorrect landing and you could die or never walk again. Doesn't stop any of us from practicing the art....

i think it just depends on how serious you want to be (or you already might be) about your hobby.

dont go and get your limb cut off for something that you are not serious about to begin with!

i think lots of people that are serious about their hobbies..(aside from stamp and coin collecting, i suppose)...bring their bodies to lenghts that would ordinarily be considered unsafe.
