I was told never to assume it makes an *** out of U and me ***/u/me but you are correct about the fan shourd it allows the fan to pull air thru the radiator and not around the radiator

Air is like electric ,it takes the easiest rout, look on any vehicle that has not been bastardized and the fan must not be fully inside the shroud it will come out 1/4 to 3/4 of a inch so it can draw air , if you put the fan deeper inside the shroud the vehicle will over heat, shroud directs the air flow in a vortex through the radiator , look on any race car passenger car and vehicle that does not have an over heating situation it will be as I said OK p/s its not a safety device for you hands, take care

The radiator shroud is there to keep you from getting your fingers and other parts injured when you open the hood and go poking around with the engine running. It will cool normally without the shroud, but it is much cooler to rest your elbows on a nice plastic shroud without BBQing flesh on a hot radiator and drawing blood on a rotating fan blade. A piece of plastic is better than giving a permanent peace sign. Agree?

no, its to allow the fan to work properly, if a fan has to much area and is to far away from the radiator it wont pull through the radiator. if the fan is within an inch of the radiator it doesnt really need a shroud because it can only pull through the radiator. if its 7" away it will pull from everywhere else. it also helps to pull air throughout the cooling fin area of the radiator not just directly in front of the fan

I've transplanted lots of engines w/o a shroud and they
worked out OK. Here's the deal-- If you have a shroud,
replace it if you remove it. Give the cooling system every
advantage you can. If the car never had one and you can
find one, fine. If not, don't worry about it unless you have
trouble with cooling. As usual, be careful around moving
fans and pulleys etc. Don't have hanging hair or clothing
around stuff like this. Let common sense rule the day.

your right the main purpose is to direct the air,,but also to help keep you from getting injured while working on it there have been a lot of people get hurt really bad,by getting a loose shirt or something caught in a fan,,and also it does help keep the air flow going in the direction it needs to go to properly help cool the engine down,,i own a repair shop in Tennessee,,and i have been asked that question a few times over the years,,i hope this helps explain it.

ive transplanted lots of motors with no fan shroud and they work just fine as far as cooling goes, all you 100 year experinced GM nerdballs ...really if you think about it when you pop the hood on a car if there was no fanshroud it would be extremely dangerous at least on the old mechanical beltdrive fans

Absolutely. If it is cracked, broken or removed you will experience overheating. It is a critical component of the cooling system. The automatic transmission lines are also connected to the radiator. Expect trans damage besides engine.
