I started smoking because I thought it was cool I was 12 yrs old I am now 30 Its hard to quit after so many years. Really there is no good reason to continue smoking and most smokers feel like they would quit if they were faced with an immediate threat of emphysema or lung cancer but usually they don't. Ive seen people who have to have a portable oxygen tank who still smoke. I guess the answer for most smokers who don't truly want to die would be It wont ever happen to me.Then when you are in the situation where you know you are facing death you figure well I'm dying anyway so why worry about it now. It's a pethedic exsuse I know but it's the truth.

Fact:
The nicotine found in cigarettes can be as addictive as heroin or cocaine.
So when people start...they NEED more..also i know this is the hardest thing to Quit... they have treatment centers for people that are addicted to Heroin / cocaine .... WHY not for Smokers??? its just as hard or even harder.
The Government SHOULD be spending Money into helping peeps Quit.
I bet it would be less Money than treating all the health issues of smokers that cant quit. My grandmother died and the money they spent with 24 hour Home-care(nurse's that come into the home) and Oxygen machines .... blood work ... all was due to the fact that she was a smoker ... Not nice ...
I bet it would be cheaper to have helped her quit when she tryed so many times over the years. Also i think that is Quiting was funded more would try :) .
Sorry i went on with that answer ... but Smoking is a hard hard hard thing to quit ... good luck with your Father.
To All that are trying to Quit ... Best of luck and keep trying its for the good of your heath ... Hugss :)

It's addictive. Once you've started (and people start for a lot of really dumb reasons, wanting to look cool, all your friends smoke, your parents smoke and you think that's what adults do) it's not easy to give up.
People think it keeps them calm, however the only reason they're not calm is that they think they need a cigarette. In other words, they get anxious because they think that if the don't have a cigarette it will make them anxious.

I was a heavy smoker for 17 years, and quit 2 1/2 years ago, when my boyfriend of 14 years was diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer. He fought valiantly for a year and a half, but lost his battle with cancer last September, and I'm still reeling.
Throat cancer is a long, slow, and terribly painful death, and I don't wish it on anyone. My father, a life long smoker, would come to visit Rick , and watched him slowly decline, yet he continues to smoke.Whenever other family members would asked him how he could bear to, after watching everything that Rick and I went through, he would respond: "Everybody has to die of something"
Sadly, that's the mindset of most smokers (and I oughta know, being a former smoker myself.) The addiction is just that powerful.
For me, it took the love of my life' s terminal diagnosis to get me to quit. But I did. Cold turkey, and never looked back. My boyfriend never smoked again after he was diagnosed, but it was too late. It breaks my heart and haunts me every day.

I can give you hundreds of excuses why I smoke, but it all comes down to this...It's a habit, nicotine is addictive and I'm hooked.
I've been smoking for 35 years, been trying to quit for 33.
Even though I smoke, I always try to educate young people to the dangers of it.

I started smoking because i liked a girl who smoked and i thought it would make her like me. It is a terribly addicting problem, and nearly impossible to give up. I quit over two years ago, and still, it would only take one cigarette, and id be right back to it. I finally quit when i almost died, and the doctors told me"quit or die". Do not try it, it will hook you too.

everybody started for different reasons...the problem isn't why did they start...the problem is how do they stop. It's an addiction and it's likened to heroin addictions. I truly happen to enjoy smoking...why I don't know...but I do recognize it is bad for me which is why I am on day 11 of not smoking. I'm hoping the worst is over.

I can't believe you're asking if you should try smoking! It would be totally up to you, but it's highly addictive. I started smoking at a very early age and I totally regret it! But alot of us smoke for many diffrent reasons...boredom, stress, oral fixation...but then it turns to addiction, habit that's very hard to kick. My advice...DON'T TRY IT!!!

because it is very addictive and because it has a remarkable calming effect. I have tried to quit often on for years, but have never made it for more than a few months at a time. Honest answer is that I like it.
