I bought a car about three years ago under a loan and can't remember whether the bank sent me a title or not. So right now I don't have the title in my posession and I want to sell the car. This is in Virginia

If the loan has not been paid off, the lending institute will still have the title. If it is paid off, you should be able to get a copy of the title from the state and county in which it was originally registered (at the time you purchased your vehicle.

Call the bank and find out if they have sent the Title. If they have, and you are sure you can't find it:
Go to the DMV and report a lost Title. They will replace the title, as long as the car isn't on any wanted lists. They will need the VIN number off the car. It will take about 2 months to get the Title.
The above information is relevant to Illinois but is probably the same for Virginia.

The Va DMV web site is good, but not that good. You'll have to do a little footwork for this (personal experience a few months ago.)

The bank might have forgotten to clear your title. The fastest way to find out is to ask them. Failing that, you'll have to go to DMV and ask. They will also be able to tell you if the bank still shows as a lienholder. Then you can get the bank to clear it, get a new title printed in a few minutes, and sell your car. Good luck.
