Adenoids are a part of the immune system, which is responsible for creating antibodies. Adenoids are glands, which swell during an infection. Open you mouth wide and look in the mirror. The adeniods are located in the back of the throat and appear to the right and left of the uvula ( that little piece of flesh on the top of your mouth). Doctor's oftentimes call enlarged adenoid glands as "kissing tonsil" because they are so close to one another, like a couple bending forward to kiss one another. However, enlarged adenoids can be a health problem. Since they are located near the throat, if they become excessively enlarged they can block the throat, making it difficult to breathe. You mentioned your daughter suffers from snoring and labored breathing, which are classical signs of enlarged adeniods. Adenoids can be safely removed; they are not a vital part of the immune system. So, removing them won't put your daughter at greater risk for infections - this is one of the top concerns for parents comtemplating removal of their child's adenoids. An adenoidectomy (removal of the adenoids) can either be complete or partial. Complete adenoidectomy completely removes the adenoid gland(s). A partial adenoidectomy involves just taking enough tissue away to shrink the size of the adenoids. It is sometimes called "shaving the adenoids." You can always ask for a second opionin. If you do decide to go ahead with the surgery, make sure to ask your physician (Ear Nose Throat doctor) how many times he/she has performed this procedure. Avoid inexperience surgeons.

It is a very common procedure, and it is a very safe procedure. It takes about 10 minutes.

They are unnecessary glands and, if enlarged, can lead to ear infections, by blocking the Eustachian tubes and serving as a source of bacteria, as well as labored breathing and snoring as you describe.

Adenoidectomies are usually indicated with chronic or recurrent ear infections. But your daughter will breathe better and she will sleep better after the procedure.

Get a second opinion if you are not comfortable with the first.
