Laptops are allowed on planes, you will be asked to take the laptop out of it's bag when you go through security. Xrays will not damage the unit. While the plane is taking off and landing you are not allowed to use electronic devices. The crew of the plane will make announcements to this effect.

At least through the end of August, you are not allowed to bring a laptop or any other carry-ons when traveling from the U.K. to the U.S. If you are traveling within the states, you should be OK. The link below should help you.

ken J is right - i travel frequently - (several times a month) and take my laptop w/ me - always as a carry on. after 3 years of travelling the only thing that has damaged it is the water i spilled on the keyboard.. :-P ... that is when i realized that it is very hard to send coherent emails when the H and the P do not work...

yes, laptops r allowed on the plane. u just have to take them out of the case to be manually exaimed & then they run them thru the xray machine like everything else. i have done this at least 6 x w/my cheap laptop & i've had no problems w/ my own. go for it! & then u can use it on the plane.

an update is that no ipods, laptops or cd-players. but this is just in europe i believe. domestic flights are OK.
and NO the x-ray machines will not ruin your laptop at all.
i know for a fact that even domestic flights wont allow you to bring any liquid anything in your carry-on including deoderant, contact lens solutions, water, lotions, etc.
only prescription meds and baby formula
