You actually don't need a prescription for Frontline, etc. You need to do a flea dip, then put on some topical flea preventative/killer ASAP and do it right. If it's just on the fur it won't help. It needs to get down to the skin; otherwise it will not be absorbed into the blood stream. You should try K9 Advantix or Frontline Plus. Make sure you do it right. None of my animals have ever gotten fleas or ticks from applying it correctly; make sure you don't give them a bath too soon after application. You also need to treat your home for fleas since they are probably living in your carpet and will just re-home themselves on the dog.
Good Luck!

Without a prescription, the best are: Advantage, Frontline and K9 Advantix. Stay away from over the counter grocery store products, such as Hartz or Sergeants. These have been known to be toxic and have killed dogs and cats before. Most topicals build up a resistance over awhile and will become ineffective. Best bet if you're having a problem is to take the plunge and go in for an exam and ask your Vet for Comfortis. The best flea prevention on the market.

None of them will work when a bad infestation of fleas keep jumping back on.
I had the same problem. I bought Hot Shot Home Insect Clear Formula insecticide (inside/outside) from Home Depot. I proceeded to spray all floors (especially carpets and rugs) in the house and then left them to dry. I then went outside and sprayed the yard including a circle (10' wide) all around the house. My cat was kept out of spraying areas until the product dried. This product kills the fleas for 90 days. Outside may be shorter if a lot of rain.
This insecticide is great. It eliminated most fleas on the first spraying. Problem areas were sprayed twice. I have a friend who fleas like to attack so I had him walk around the day after I sprayed and then sprayed again where fleas attacked him.
Now my cat lives with hardly a flea and any that get on are killed by "advantage."
K9 Advantix is an excellent once a month product for dogs. It "provides triple protection against fleas, mosquitoes and ticks (including deer ticks the primary carrier of Lyme disease."
You can buy online (a lot cheaper than my cats "Advantage") at: http://www.dog.com/family.asp?SKW=Advantix&Category=Flea%20%26%20Tick&srccode=PPC0940

If you wash your dog in Head N Shoulders, this shampoo will paralize the fleas. This will make it easy for you to pick them off. It won't completely cure the problem, but it will help. When the eggs hatch the dog will have more fleas. Remember that fleas give the dog tape worms. So once the fleas are gone, the dog may need a de-wormer.
Good Luck

I use Revolution on my dogs and I don't have a problem with fleas, but I have a friend of mine that swears by Applecider Vinegar and water sloution poured over dogs coat after bathing, she says this is all she ever uses and her dogs have never had a flea. It's one part Applecider vinegar to 3 parts water.

I live in an area that is horrible with fleas. the best that i have found so far is K9Advantix! You can get it at the vet w/o a prescription but the cheapest two places I have found is http://www.drsfostersmith.com or http://www.dog.com - If you order from drs foster and smith - they have a great de-flea shampoo that works great as a combination with the K9Advantix! Good Luck!

I have heard people swear by Brewer's Yeast sprinkled in a dog's food daily works. Never tried it myself. I know of some people though who do it religiously. Brewer's Yeast is for sale in health food stores. I guess they use a tablespoon or two. Maybe you could find something online about it.

When I lived in southern Mississippi I used the Brewer's Yeast for our dogs. It did work. Your vet could tell you how much to use according to the size/weight of your dog.

I use an otc called Bio Spot. I've used it on all my dogs and on all the rescues that I've had for over 10 yrs. It works!
If you have an inside dog, then you will also have to treat the inside of your house.
