First off you get what you pay for. That said try AVG. They used to have one revision older than current software for free download. this version was upgradeable and updateable so it worked pretty good for me in the past. AVG.com or grissoft.com i believe.

the best at the moment and I too use it it is called AVG...u can download it free at www.grisoft.com or go to www.download.com and type and search AVG and get it downloaded...
the good news is...virus definitions also free forever
