discussion should be engaged when any party is willing to listen.
on this forum? many people are here just to mock and ridicule.
Their are those promoting the truth, and those promoting lies, yet the fact that there is all of these participants playing their roles, supports what the scripture said at 2Peter3:3,' For you know this first, that in the last days there will come ridiculers with their ridicule, proceeding according to their own desires.'

Why can't religious discussions be taken deep to establish true respect and understanding, while still recognizing that there are differences between them? People can have respect for one another without ignoring diversity.

The question seems like what is called a "false dichotomy" - when you have to choose between two things and there are really many more options.

If the participants are secure enough in their own beliefs that they don't feel threatened by the fact that someone else believes something different, and if they're respectful enough of the rights of the other person to have their own beliefs and aren't out to convert them, IMHO deep discussion can be intriguing, enlightening, and can reveal surprising similarities at the core.

Unfortunately, as much of the interaction here shows, there aren't many people who fit those two criteria...

what would be the point of a discussion at all if u were not willing to go deep enough to have a meaningful exchange of ideas? And the unity that would emerge might surprise you.

I think that the more we know about the others, the better off we will be ourselves. We basically have two choices; we can try our best to learn as much as we can, building bridges and destroying fences, or we can sit on our hands cursing others for things we have no knowledge of and build apartheid walls between us.
When we do decide to accept knowledge over ignorance, we have to be open minded about certain things. We may not agree with them, or believe in them, and we don't have to and no one is forcing us to, however we should do our best to understand them. Keeping shallow to avoid conflict isn't going to help us understand. Digging deeper to discover doesn't always have to resort in conflict either. It's the manner in which you go about it.

Of course, how else will you know about the vast world of religion. For example, Islam and Judaism and Christianity all have a common root: Abraham. And, there are more similarities between fundamental Christians and fundamental Shiites then we realize. Maybe if we knew more about different religions, we would have a better chance of getting along.

yes different religions should participate in discussion especially in today's world. from Muslim Christians, Hindus , Jewish and all the religions in the world should participate together in discussion. this will reduce the tensions between religion and help them to live in peace. it will bring them together and help them to work closely with one another and help each other in times of need like wars. it will also help to reduce or eliminate terrorism. pope john Paul brought Christians closers to all regions in the world by traveling to holy sites of other religions and also having conference with the religious leaders . his trips had reduce the tension between Christians and Jew's, Muslim and other faith.
