Yes I wanted to not say 'modern' but the responses might have been very bad. Bad things have always been licensed by religion.
This is forgetting the good of religion for a moment - isn't all bad.

onelm0 - I think what you said should be publicised a lot more, though I don't follow any sects or worship anything.

I would have chosen 'Will o the. . . .' but the destiny of man bit, sorry. I can't decide so it's going to have to be a vote.

Sort of.

Most religion is conducted as a business. The high priority is to amass big congregations and big cash flow. Generally speaking the bigger the group the greater the corruption.

True Christianity is a little flock (Luke 12:32).

Chris,

I have studied this for many years. Religion, is the attempt of men, to franchise something they cannot even comprehend. Kind of like a painting, trying to control the Artist. As our species has evolved, so have our religions. This is just my opinion, but I think that the Age of Religion, is coming to a close. There is a great and terrible war coming in the Middle East, and surrounding regions. When it is finally over, and the bodies have been cleaned up, it is my hope, that man will have lost his appetite for religion completely. Note, that I did not say God, but religion. God, is the inescapable destiny of our race, but religion has been more of a hinderance than a help, in getting there. I find it interesting, that Jesus only singled out one group of people and attacked them while on earth. The professional clergy. He, in fact warned all future generations to be wary of them. He said that they do not enter into God's Kingdom, and prevent others from doing so. Yes, religion has been used to justify some of the most horrible crimes ever committed against humanity. Some of them were almost as terrible as what the communists did during the last century. Funny how we all remember what the Nazi's did, but forget the millions executed by the communists, and the church.
