Ok, I have been learning to drive automatic in my home country of UK but I am coming to work on a cruise ship all around the US and won't have passed my test by then. I have my C1 visa. After my contract I have 2 months to spend in the US so I will visit my aunt who stays in NC. Can I learn to drive and pass my test in the US even though I am not a citizen but will have my work visa?

Yes, as long as you are here legally you can get a NC license! Please ignore anyone who says you must be a citizen. They are plainly WRONG.

Some states do require proof of legal status but none require citizenship. Your work visa fulfills the legal status requirement so getting a license here will be a non issue.

Do keep in mind that you'll still have to continue with your driving instruction when you return to the UK. Your US license won't be much use there though it should be valid for 30 days or so.

Oh, yeah, and don't be fooled by the absurdly easy road test in the US. The UK test is a nut-buster and you're still going to have to pass it when you get back home. I lived in the UK for 7 years in the 80s and 90s. I was stunned by the difficulty of the UK test and failed it twice even though I had been driving for over 15 years in the US and 2 in the UK (on a Forces license) prior to taking the test.

Enjoy your stay in the US!

As a visitor, your UK driver's license should be sufficient.
I see you haven't got that yet...
First you'll need someone to lend you a car which will be tough for a new driver.
And then better think of that we drive on the right here, which can be a tough one to get after being used to driving on the wrong ;-) side of the road.
Check with the American embassy in the UK, they can give you the info you seek.

Each State licenses, State by State; it's the nature of our federation. All styates do not have the same regulations. Also realize that there may be a big delay in getting an appointment for a road test.

Yes, but you must think to drive on the right. More people are coming from europe. That explains why someone else is always on my side of the road.
