Tough question. I think if my "child" was a perpetrator of abuse, either physical or sexual, I think I might be inclined to side with the spouse. Other than that, it's hard to turn away from your child, regardless of the circumstances (particularly for mothers, I think).

This is so common. I mean it starts off as small children then people go into adulthood with this. I think its a sense of someone being accepted. I have 2 daughters. My boyfriend is totally accepting of my daughter but I would never expect my boyfriend to choose my daughter over our daughter he accepts her but wouldnt do. But then again in a case I know. My friend whom is married was cheated on and his mother went on the daughter in law side.
I really beleive that its all about the situation and relationship you have with your child. But then again if your child is in the wrong its not good to stick by there side when you trully feel they don't deserve your being there for them. Its a hard situation.
(If he cheated on her he is in the wrong. If he left her and then went with his feelings he was a man to do it. Not alot of men have courage to get out then express there feelings. Men who cheat are asses and should never be sided with. )

I agree with killkill, watch "The Good Son". It's a very good movie. Although it is not about in laws, and adult children, it is about two young boys, and the mother doesn't choose her son. Mcauly Culkin and Elijah Wood gave a very good performence. You'll like it.

I might side with the spouse but i would still be there for my child, in a violence situation or abuse in some other fashion.

No, there is never any good reason i think to pick anyone over your own flesh and blood, life is far too short to do this to anyone that is truly related to you.

Violence...why should you side? you aren't getting the divorce. If kids are involved tell both of them that you want contact with your grand children and work it from there.
