The specific type matters but also one has to know what the weather conditions are where you live and where you are planing on keeping it. If in your garden you have to consider what type of plants you have and if they can be harmful. We here in Africa can leave them outside the whole year round and only have to provide shade and basic shelter but if you live where it snows...

Which kind of African tortoise? Egyptian? Sulcata? Hingeback? Leopard? Radiated? Some other kind? Each has special needs and would require a different set-up.

Honestly, I hope it is NOT a hingeback- they need high humidity approaching 100% and have other tricky needs. Sulcatas and Leopards are HUGE tortoises that can be really tough to care for and keep when they get big.

I'd be glad to shoot plans and care ideas if you let us know the species.

Good luck!

What specific species of African Tortoise is it? Sulcata? Care for a baby tort is fairly simple, but they can weigh as much as 200 pounds, so be sure you really want it. It will definitely outlive you and your daughter. www.Chelonian.org www.kingsnake.com
