The symptoms vary depending on the stage of the cancer. My mom has skin cancer for over 16 years; it started with a itch in one of her moles, she used to scratch it so much that it started to bleed. It also grew in size and the shape was uneven; it change colors also (from light to dark). Every time one of her moles start to itch she has to go to the dermatologist so she can take it out.
When in doubt it is better to go to the doctor, he/she is the only one with the knowledge to know if you have something.

A mole that has seemed to grow or change in shape, that is irregular, or discolored--like two different colors. If a mole becomes raised and it wasn't before, that could be bad. If a mole is larger than the eraser of a pencil and it's not a birthmark then you should get it checked out, also.

depends on the type. Basal and squamous look like ulcers on the skin - dry, bleeds and cracks. Melanoma is the dark, irregular borders, fast changing. Only 20% of Melanoma start in an existing mole though.
