Litter box , I changed her to a new cat little a couple of months ago and she used it without a problem. My cat 7, I've had her for 6 months and this past month she pees in her box, but one day she pooped on my couch, and I stuck her nose near it and told her no, no no sternly. Then next day she pees and poops on the couch I then took the covering off and machined watched it, and locked her in my room for a couple of days with her cat litter and food. (because of the heart) I then could not stand the smell, and have only one place and one bathroom (which is so tiny, you could not leave her in there for a day) to put her box. She continued using the box to pee, but not poop, she will wait days, then I hear her scratching, & she is scrathing, while I'm asleep, and she wakes me in my bedroom rug and then I see her in the process of pooping and push her out of the room (litter box was clean) she will hold it for days, so it is a matter of time before she does it again. (indoor cat only)

Our cat Mac, 5 years, one of two brothers with us, was also doing this sometime back. It was during a heavy neglect time for the two boys as we were so busy with hospital trips for me and also there are so many boxes all around the house due to our pending move. So on advise from our neigbhbour who has had cats for 35 years of her life, we started making time to carress both of them and talk to them again, as the last few months we had really hardly been having time to spend with the cats. Mac is especially sensitive to that and after just the first day, he stopped doing it, when he realsied we were really sorry about it.
I dotn think punishing your cat will help, but rather somehow, he is feelign neglected...so ask yourself if there have been any sudden changes in the house, or have you been ignoring her lately..or soem other reason why she is trying to get your attention? If nothing helps, ask a vet what to do? usually it is a behavioural iussue where the cat wants attention and knows just how to get it. remember, even scolding or shooing him away is just attention to the cat.
Hope this helps.

I love that you put in all the relevant information! 9 years old is getting up there for a kitty so that might come into play. I think you have a good strategy because sometimes a cat just gets a wild hair. It's better to wait and see if it happens again before racking up the vet bills. One thing I would ask is if the dog was in the house with the cat alone when the incident occurred. They may have gotten along well for 3 years but sometimes unsupervised they could have a spat and the cat might just have been asserting his territory because of the dog. Something else that could have happened, someone knocked on the door while you were gone. Maybe it scared kitty and in an attempt to scare away the felons he asserted his territory. If the dog was involved, perhaps barking at the visitor, this could have added stress. It's always hardest to understand behavior of animals when one is not present to see the circumstance. Hope kitty feels better soon.

You must take that cat to the vets. Cats do not naturally make a mess if they don't have to.
When you go to the vet, you need to have blood test done and have an CT Scan done for myelomalacia. The cat may have a deteriorating spinal cord or a tumor sitting near their nervous system. My cat acted the same way about 2 months before she passed away.

I never in her life fussed at her until she pooped on the floor. Even then, I only fussed at her once. I will never forgive myself for that.

Just get the cat checked out by a good vet. Avoid Petsmart if you can. They misdiagnosed my cat. The night she died, the emergency room vet told me that my cats problem had been coming on for months. PetSmart told me she was diabetic and that if I kept giving her insulin, she would be okay.

My cat was doing this as well, using the litter box to pee but not poop. I asked my vet and she said my cat was constipated and was associating the litter box with pain, so therefore going other places. I now add a little Metamucil in his food and that took care of the problem. He hasn't pooped on the floor since then.

Rubbing nose in filth doesn't work with cats. You know this by now.
Be sure to clean all soiled surfaces thoroughly. Use a special clean for cat mess. I like Natures Miracle, you can get it at big box pet stores. Label says you may have to use it twice. Label is right. Put a plastic cover on couch. On the rug she has soiled put one of those carpet runners with the gripper spikes up.
Then get another litter box. Some cats need one for solids, and one for liquids. why? I don't know.

If this is a new development than your cat may be trying to tell you something. The thing is trying to figure out what it is. Do you have a covered box? You may want to try one and clean it out daily. Cats don't like to step in their mess. I know my cat likes his privacy and when I removed the lid off his box until the new kitten could get used to it he wanted outside to potty. Also you say you have had the cat for 6 months so he or she may be used to going outside. Having an inside cat that toilets outside is a wonderful thing! Also, my male now eleven years old started peeing on the floor when he was having a kidney problem so, don't rule out an illness until you have spoken to a vet. Maybe kitty is constipated and when it is ready he just lets er go wherever he is.

My cat wouldn't use the litter box for a while after she had used it for a year and a half streight (shes 2 and a half years). So we put her outside for a few days (3 or 4). When we let her back in we showed her the litter box I haven't had a problem since........

I agree with Sparkie. Cats are naturally clean animals. If they refuse to use the litter box it's for two reasons...one, it's dirty (and yours isn't) and two, they associate it with pain. A visit to the Vet is in order. Good luck.

cats often do that when they're mad at you, or jealous for attention. try using a spray bottle on her when you catch her doing it, but make sure you lavish attention on her when she's being good. also, move the poop itself to the litterbox, to remind her that it goes there.
