A lot of commonalities exist within the same caste in both religious and day to day practices. Also hygiene and food habits differ between caste.Language is not a problem if married within the same caste. The concept of joint families are more prevalent in India which may also be a reason for marrying within the same caste, thus maintaining the integrity(Reeti and Riwaj).

because each caste represents a different level of income and place in society. It is slowly changing nowadays, but they have a long ways to go. You can think of it like how Americans will usually marry someone with similar education and family background. That is the basic idea. The problem in India is if a person is born to a low caste, they have that their whole lives with no hope of having a good career. But again, the government is making some changed, but in my opinion the whole caste system should be elliminated altogether. For more info visit:http://www.indianchild.com/caste_system_india.htm

Because they have their own particular traditions and their own particular food and they prefer to marry within their own caste because they can trace the families back for generations. They know whom their children are marrying and know the background well. If you marry outside the caste you will not know the background. Educated people prefer their children marry educated spouses and in the same income group. If you have a highly talented child with a good income would you like him or her to marry into a lower educated group or into a family that doesnt have the resources to keep her happy? Most marriages outside India fail because of monetary matters....its money and money all the time that causes rifts amongst husbands and wives. Educated people will have enough in common to talk sensibly with one another. If you have common interests and enough money most marriages work.

Because they believe they are in their particular caste for a reason. You get into a caste based on your past life. If you were a good person in your last caste you move up the ladder so to speak. And if you were a bad person you go down to a lower caste. People of higher castes wouldnt want to associate with the lower castes because they are in that caste because of the type of person they are and have been in the past lives. And even a person in a lower class might not want to be with someone of the higher caste, because they believe that what they do in this life has implications for their next life. Thus they want to be as good as they can so they can move up the caste ladder.

because the caste system is a class system. Members of a higher caste such as the Brahamin would not marry someone from a lower caste. In India a great deal of marriages are still arranged and they are largely business deals. What benefit could be gained from someone marrying below their caste? You do not see members of the royal family marrying commoners in the UK, do you?

Same reason as the ancient western traditions where a king of a particular country may want his daughter to marry the son of the next country's king so that their countries will be united and that is how they gain ownership of countries and the wealth stays withing the boundaries of the fused relationship of those people. Also to keep the bloodline of that caste 'pure' bred..
