He barks everytime we put him in the crate, sometimes for maybe 5 minutes, sometimes for longer. And he doesn't really go in there even when we leave the door open the whole time. Sometimes i put some new toys and treats in there, he'll run in there, grab it and run back out. What can i do to help him like his crate? I'm worried that he really hates it!

For those who opposed to the idea of crating your puppy, i can respect that. But please focus on my question, if you can answer THE QUESTION, i would rather you not say anything (to make a fool out of yourself)

This question is obviously not for those ignorant people who have no idea what they are talking about. Research about crate before giving stupid comments. Plus this question, she's asking about what to do with the puppy, not if she should put the puppy in the crate. Sometimes there are just people out there that are plain...xxxxx...omg

How old is your puppy?
He probably does hate it right now. He will in time get used to it. The time it will take varies greatly from dog to dog. I had a golden that it took several months for her to get used to her crate. I have a Jack Russell pup now that took to hers right away. They do feel that it's their own little space - that none of the other animals can invade - their safe zone, so the speak.
The toys and treats in her crate are a good idea. Also try a small ticking alarm clock wrapped in a towel. It mimics a mother dog's heart beat and sometimes calms down a puppy. If you're afraid of the puppy chewing it, place it just outside the crate next to the puppy's bed. Also a big fluffy towel that they can burro into and make it more comfy helps too. And if there are accidents, towels are easily washed.
Lastly, don't give up. Patience is a necessary tool in crate training - and sometimes earplugs are too.
Good Luck.

Do you take him out when he barks or leave him in? If you take him out, you're conditioning him that if he barks, he'll get out.
I think he needs more time. The only thing I can think of to suggest right now, is put him in the crate, close the door, and stay close by. When he barks, tell him NO firmly, or quiet or whatever word you want to use. When he settles, even for a couple of seconds, praise him a lot, but quietly and calmly (you dont want to get him excited) and give him a treat in the crate.
Keep on repeating this (but don't leave him in the crate for long periods of time). He will catch on that he's rewarded for being quiet and scolded for barking. Good luck

alrite. some of the people who answered this are wrong. dogs dont mind being locked in their crates because the smaller rooms give them a sense of security. when your dog barks in the crate, toss a can filled with rocks towards the crate ( not to hurt him, just to startle him) and sternly say "QUIET" or "HUSH" or a similar command. ( just be sure to use the same command everytime) when he stops barking praise him lavishly and give a treat and let him come out. it may take a little time but this will work. good luck!

Get rid of the crate. There is nothing you can do to make your puppy like it. Would you want to be put in a crate?

As a golden owner I found that goldens need more attention- they are PEOPLE dogs- family dogs. A crate may not work. Make the little guy part of your family and you're both gonna be so much happier! Goldens are the BEST!

he will get used to it just give him time. leave him in his crate at night and in the morning give him a treat and tell him what a good boy he is. you should also give him a treat when you put him in his crate it will show him that it is a good place not a bad one.

My dog didn't like her crate at all for over a year...just don't use it as a punsihment or anything like that...they will hate it even more...my dog eventually didn't mind it beacause we gave her treats to go in and eventually we tell her to "go to bed" she runs in her crate herself and we give her a treat. you just have to train your dog...good luck
