I'm asking this in the religion and spirituality section because I specifically would like to hear from the people in this section on this question.

Let's face it, what do these points do for us really, other than tell us and others what level (of the 7) we are on. It might give us more credibility, but you get nothing for moving to the next level, other than the status symbol.

Also, I've had times where I've had two (or more) equally good answers and the 2nd choice on down gets the same amount of points as the lousy answers.

What would you think if based on your level, you could have an option to donate between one to fiften points for any good answer? If that was a feature would you use it?

It might be a way to ensure some better thought out replies?

What do you think about this idea?

The thumbs up/thumbs down does nothing for the points a person accumulates. And let's face it, unless you go back and review your responses to individual questions, how would you know whether it was liked or not? That's one reason I don't feel the thumbs up/thumbs down is really a good feature.

But the ability to make a person feel good by donating them some extra point (limited amount) would definitely be something I would feel good about.

Actually, I'm not looking for Yahoo to give bonus points, but allowing us as individuals to give up points for a good answer. It would be only voluntary and a way to give something of yourself to another person.

Babyshambles, you missed my point here. I know it won't give me anything other than to say you have a lot of points and a certain level. But I'd like to do something constructive with these points by being able to donate my own points to someone who put the time into a well thought-out answer.

You know - if I asked a question and got a fabulous answer I would be happy to donate points. I don't see what the points do for us - other than the fact that I am competitive in nature and it makes me feel good.

You might have something there. If there were administrators within the categories, they could dole out more points for excellent answers. Yahoo would supply the administrators with points to be used as awards for legit and well thought out answers. That way, the person asking the question would not have to sacrifice their points. Great answers would be elected as recipients for higher point awards only by the person asking the question. Perhaps people like you and I should be running this.

Hopefully, the new rating of individual answers will help get rid of the junk and the good answers will get more credit for their correctness.

The only problem i have with giving points away would be the point gamers. YAT is trying to make it so that you level is a statement of your creditbility. If we could give away points the gamers could get some really bad people in the top levels.

I don't believe the number of points you have (or your level) say anything about your credibility on any subject. The points here don't work that way.

One person can gain a lot of points by offering thoughful, helpful answers, while another person can rack up a bunch of points by responding with "You're stupid."

I don't do this for the points. If you look at my record, all my time is spent in the religion and spirituality forum. I am here only to learn and teach. If I end up with 100,000 points good for me. If I leave here with only 1 point, same difference.

Stop whinging, its just a site to while away some time, it doesnt mean anything. Its not a status symbol. What did you think the points were going to get you? A trip to effing disneyland?

I am not in this for the points. I am here to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, answer questions and call sinners to repentance.
