Because there is a God and some people need a push for them to release that belief that was trapped deep behind that logical brain of theirs!

"People who say they don't believe in God always pray to him in times of sorrow or hardship"
Always? Wow. You should go on TV, write books. What other secret knowledge are you privy to?
If atheists ever "pray" I betcha it's not likely to be to any god written about in mythological books like the bible, the koran, etc. As Carl Sagan said, it doesn't make much sense to pray to the law of gravity, but if atheists believed in a god - if only for a moment - it would be a god that makes sense.

Always? I never prayed when my grandmother died, my dad died, a few friends died, and someone I loved more than she ever had a chance to know was murdered. When my parents divorced, I never had it enter into my head to pray about it. I have, as best I can recall, never prayed. Period. I do not believe in any God, Gods, or supernatural entities. I certainly would not assume that non-existent things would spring to my aid when things got bad for me. It seems as if you are a believer, so tell me if you pray to Gods other than your own when you run into problems. If not, why do you assume that anyone else does?

Why do you generalize and say that all people who don't believe in deities will end up praying? I never prayed as a child when I was a christian never mind now that I am an atheist. I don't pray at all no matter what the situation is.

That's not true, I don't believe in God, nor do I ever pray when something wrong is going on. I love the catholic church, sometimes I like going there, but just because of the architecture.
Don't think that just because one person you know does that, that the other 6 billion people will... :)

I don't pray (and I believe there is a God... just probably not your God). I have yet to see an Atheist that did pray during anything. Maybe your friend that has done this, or whomever it is that you have seen do this, isn't actually without belief?

Every human being has the ingrained feeling that he is the subject of a master. Some may deny God, but when they are stricken they have to naturally look for some ally who'll comfort them and unconsciously they turn to God.
These are people who haven't understood life. They think God is some super hero sitting up there. They fail to understand that Love is God and God is Love. As simple as that.

Why do some people believe and repeat the lies their preachers tell?
I've never known any atheist who prayed about anything.

Hey why take a chance when you are in desperately tight spot or in extremis. You can use all the help you can get, & you get much less fussy and discriminating. Like the New York State lottery advertises, "Hey, you never know?"
