According to the Tibetan Book of the Dead, once a soul leaves the body it travels 7x7 into the next world. Not sure what the 7x7 refers to - days, hours, weeks? Anyhow, for 49 somethings you're supposed to pray for the soul's safe journey. We have similar beliefs in the western world, from the "laying in state" or wake to the mourning period to where you can have novenas said for the deceased, etc. Other faiths have similar rituals, they call the inbetween places by different names, but it's like you set out to go to the mall to go to that specific store and you get lost in the parking lot, or sidetracked in the food court. Just delays your journey, and it's a rather meaningless and pointless delay.
