Its old fashioned and complicated but I will simplify it. Men are thought of as the protector, strong and caring. Who wants a boyfriend who can't protect and stick up for you when required. Girls on the other hand are supposed to be shy timid creatures who look nice and need protecting. Obviously times have now changed and most women are quite capable of looking after themselves, but some people feel it is not ladylike for a woman to appear jealous and over-protective.

Hope this helps.

It is instinctive for men to be "protective". I would even go so far as to say that it is genetic and cultural. Men are expected to be the provider and protector. On that note, men take offense (even if they don't know why) when anyone tries to protect them.

Because when girls are jealous....oh laaalaaaa... they are really jealous, they can do extremely mean. Guys don't go that far as they are more open and physical.

Welcome to life, or the man version of it. There is no answer, other than men think they do no wrong and we are just inferior and unreasonable women.
