Some of them can be considered as cults. Jehovah's Witnesses predicted that it would come in 1914 and it didn't,everyone is talking about it because things are getting bad and the earth is very angry. If you read Matthew the 24 th chapter Jesus gives his diciples a list of things to watch for when he would be near, notice he never gave a date!

Interesting answer from Jim there, I did not know that Jehovah's Witnesses predicted that the world would end in 1914 (and it didn't), but since we skipped the 1300's due to superstition, wouldn't that put it at 2014? I personally think the reason people that claim the world is coming to an end are considered sect adepts (as you stated) is probably because people don't want to hear it. But if you look at what is going on in the world and read the Bible, it's scarey. More and more people are going to church these days also. Probably because deep down they think there is a possibility that this may be the beginning of the end and they want to prepare correctly. (in their view).

They should rightfully be considered charlatans, liars or delusional.
