First of all, get a wide-mouthed container, like a jam jar or something. Put some water and a few scraps of fruit in it (banana peels, apple cores, whatever). Cover the top with plastic wrap and cut a tiny hole in the middle. Put this wherever the fruit flies are at their worst. Then, CLEAN! You have to make sure you get any tiny little scrap they might be after. They're particularly fond of flying around the garbage can and fruit bowls.
In a few days most of your flies should be in the trap. Then you just put the lid on it and throw it out.

Its difficult because every time you buy any fresh produce there is a chance that fruit flies, their eggs or larva are on the fruit.

So to begin with you have to clean everything you bring into the house. Wash all the fruit you buy as soon as you get it home.

Even then, there is always a chance that a live insect will find its way into your home by other means. So keep all fruit under cover rather than, for example, leaving a stack of apples in an open basket.

Fruit flies will only live for 24 hours. Get rid of the rotten fruit that had attracted them

Of course like everyone says you must get rid of any rotting fruit or food. Also check for dying houseplants. They sometimes are attracted to those. I use to live out in the country and we would get them pretty bad sometimes and what I did was took a little bleach (at night when you're going to bed) and poured some down all the drains. If they don't have any drinkable water they will die. I did this for about 3 nights and then they were gone.

Don't keep fruits and vegetable past their time. If you do put them in a sealed bag before you throw them out or put in garbage disposal. I keep my fruits and veggies in the fridge and I never get them. Bananas as well!

Clean your house really well and then get some fly tape to hang all over your house. Once they're gone and your house is clean then chances are they won't come back. Good luck.
