And if so which version? Ultimate is the best and obviously going to be the most expensive.

I will upgrade to Vista but only when I buy a new computer which I'm now holding off until Vista is released as a full version and they've spotted a good deal of the glitches. Think I'll give the Beta that's been released a miss for the moment only just done a system restore on my PC and once was enough for the moment. If you're interested in Vista there are a few interesting articles about the Beta in the gear section of www.ign.com.

I will definitely install Windows Vista Ultimate as soon as it is available...

I have tried the latest beta and both 32bit and 64bit variants and while I find the increased security a pain in the backside at times it does have a number of tempting features. Even at this stage the multipedia and DVD suport is way ahead of the Windows XP MCE*

*(Media Center Edition)

The biggest issues with the current beta's at lack of support from all the security vendors (Norton, McAfee, etc etc etc). In fact only Trend works at present. It is actually decent too - but buggy. The last thing I want is buggy security...

Actually I might have tolerated the glitches, but it absolutely does not support my monitor (Mitsubishi 2070sb) and it will be a cold day in hell before I use my screen at the default settings for a generic plug and play (read flickering)

Windows Vista Ultimate
If you want all of the best business features, all of the best mobility features, and all of the best home entertainment features that Windows Vista has to offer, Windows Vista Ultimate is the solution for you. With Windows Vista Ultimate you don't have to compromise

... and if the release version of the Ultimate edition still doesn't support my monitor it's coming off again!

I have XP Professional, the only choice for me is the Ultimate Edition and really, who would want the watered down versions anyway because they're just... ummm, crap?

Also, I don't know how much the box is going to cost but you aren't actually buying the operating system, since all versions of Vista are included on the installation DVD, though you may buy a license for a certain version with the box, you can upgrade the license at any time using Windows Anytime upgrade. But yeah, I'm going to get it, it's pretty, I like the GUI (it's the only thing I like about it), I'm turning off all those resource hogging security features and helpers and I'm going to stare blissfully at my transparent dialog boxes.

It depends...
1. How hungry it is for resources/new hardware.
2. Depends if new software works on this and not so well XP.
3. Whether it restricts my music even more.

I'm quite happy with XP and soon SP3 after Vista and then SP4 maybe. So XP has a lot of life in it, plus you can create a new streamed disk later with SP3 built in and some of Vista may be added to XP SP3. Also when Vista is released, viruses will be aimed more at that and will be buggy as first release no doubt. Also people upgrading will be selling their old Windows, so is likely if anything I'll be upgrading a couple of Me PCs to run XP!!!

Like Lars_S, but I use linux all of the time (used an XP box at work last week, 1 blue screen & numerous crashs). I have read a few reviews of vista and though it probably looks pretty, linux has most of the features advertised in vista already, Also it looks like vista will be carrying all sorts of digital rights restrictions and restrictions on what drivers & software you can run. There is another issue with the insidious piece of malware microsoft is installing on your PCs to validate your copy of XP, will there be similar with vista? I expect so. There also appear to be hardware issues and any but the most up to date hardware will have trouble running vista (OK if your'e buying new hardware). Finally what will be the cost? too much for many!

All previous alpha/beta versions have been very stylish but also very annoying. I use Linux most of the time because Windows crashes too much on me - but I will consider switching either to Windows Vista -- only if they make it less annoying and user-un-friendly -- or otherwise OSX Leopard -- all new Windows features are stolen from Apple or Linux anyway...

What will be the point? They promised so much and then didn't deliver. Vista is just XP with a paint job now. They were going to put in a new 3d engine, faster index and cache setup, etc. They didn't.

No, because only cirtain pc's are able to do so. New os are only worth buying around a year after release when all the bugs have been ironed out. People who buy on day 1 are free product testers.
