Because the blind man wanted to commit suicide while traveling to the operation, but he accidently walked into the bathroom, when he got his sight back he was able to do IT correctly.

He was blind and he never knew wat the world really looked like probably it was not a suicide he meant by jumping off de train or another reason i can come up with is that maybe he got the sight back through his wife's eyes and that might ve pained him a lot
