Will you stay in one city (Moscow or St. Petersburg) or travel inside Russia as well?
Let's be optimistic:
Airfare from the U.S. to a major city (Moscow or St. Petersburg) - $ 700 (if you're lucky, can easily be about $1,000, for good deals check www.kayak.com). If you're coming from Europe, it can be much cheaper
Hotels - $ 50/night minimum (in Moscow I would put $120 to be more realistic)
Food - $ 20 - 50 per day .
Local travel - depends where you go. So can be anything between $ 100 to $ 700.
Souvenirs, drinks etc. - another $ 250 (again, on the low side)
Although you can do it under 2,000, more realistically we're talking about $2,500 - $3,000. Wow, quite expensive.
Unless, of course, you buy a tour (they have negotiated tariffs).
