I've got a really bad toothache, it woke me up this morning and it's really sore, my mum gave me painkillers but they haven't worked at all, the pain is there all the time and nothing makes it go away. My mum says I have to go to the dentist tomorrow - what will happen when I go? Because I haven't been since I was really little and I don't remember what happens and I'm really scared. Are they going to pull my tooth out? I really don't want that to happen. And is there anything I can do to stop my tooth hurting so bad? I'm only 13 so I can't take much tablets. Please tell me what will happen at the dentist tomorrow, I'm so scared :o(

Hi sweetheart, I hope I can help to make you less scared about going to the dentist tomorrow. First of all, if your toothache is really bad and is there all the time, it sounds like you probably have a cavity which has got really deep in your tooth and has reached the nerve. Have you ever had a cavity before and had a filling? Because you'll probably need to get a root filling in this sore tooth. That's like a regular filling, but takes a little bit longer because they have to take the nerve out of your tooth too. First, when you get to the dentist, they will have a look in your mouth at all of your teeth, not just the one that hurts. Because you haven't been for a while, they will probably do some x-rays to check out how bad the cavity in your sore tooth is, and to check if you have any other cavities that they can't see just by looking in your mouth. Then, because you're in pain, they'll probably want to fix your tooth then and there.
If you need a root filling, they will give you an injection in the gum next to the bad tooth. This does hurt a little bit, but it doesn't last long and then your mouth on that side will go all numb and you shouldn't feel anything. The dentist will take a drill and drill out the decayed part of your tooth and remove the nerve too. He'll put a temporary filling in it which will stay there for a couple of weeks probably, and then you'll have to go back and get a permanent one - that's what happened to me anyway.
If the tooth is really bad, or if it's a baby tooth that will be falling out soon, the dentist might want to pull it out. But try not to worry - I've had three teeth pulled out when I was about your age, and it doesn't hurt once you are numb.
Try not to be too scared, at least the dentist will be able to stop your tooth from hurting. Good luck.

That's the problem, isn't it? You haven't been since you were little. Without sounding mean, if you had been going regularly either once or twice a year, whatever is wrong now (probably a cavity) would have been noticed and fixed before it got to the point of causing you pain.
You are afraid and that's natural, but the Dentist will numb your tooth before he removes the decayed portion and fills the tooth, so you wont feel anything. Just keep your eyes closed and you should be fine.

Don't be scared. Dentists are great these days. They just love to save your teeth, so will do everything NOT to extract any. Because the longer you keep them, the more money the dentists make! You probably just need a filling. The dentist will anaesatise (sp?) your gum (if you need an injection) before working on your tooth.

Take four deep, slow breaths before the Dentist calls you in his surgery, or do these breathing exercises each time you are feeling nervous. Also, let the dentist know right from the start that you are nervous and tell him that you want to know each thing he is about to do. That way you will feel more in control,.

You'll be okay. The next tablet your mum gives you, don't swallow it, but place it on your tooth and let it just melt - it'll work and take the pain away. :)

I love my dentist, I have seen him since I was six, so 20 years now. You may have an infected tooth and yes he may have to remove it, but it is for your own health. An infected tooth can burst, flooding your body will all those toxins and buggies which can make you really sick, if the dentist removes this then it cannot hurt you anymore. If they have to remove it, he will either gas you with laughing gas- it makes you giggle and forget the pan or he will have to do a local anesthetic- he puts a shot of liquid pain numing medication, it fells cold, the sicking of the needle in may hurt a bit, but that is really fast and then your gums and lips feel kinda rubbery, but they don't hurt.
Most dentist are used to people being scared, mine likes to be funny to make me feel less sscared. They make sure to tell you before they do it, why they are doing it, what it will feel like etc.

He may clean your teeth while you are there; he takes a litlle scraping tool and pulls the plaque off your teeth. It feels kinda funny and makes a hollow sound in your ears cause it is in your mouth. For me the fun part is the polishing after the scraping. He takes what sounds like a little drill, puts special tooth cleaner that is abrasive in it and rubs it on your teeth, I think it is the best part, because I am ticklish in my mouth and all the vibration make me laugh. People think its weird, but I think its pretty cool it makes me special, my dentist looks forward to seeing me,

I have had to have a tooth removed, but it was stuck inside the roof of my mouth and they had to put me to sleep to take it out by surgery. Didn't hurt. When I woke up, it hurt a bit and he gave me pain pills and I got to stay home watch cartoons and eat milkshakes for three days. When it would start to hurt, I'd take a pain pill and it would go away.

Doctors can give you better pain medication than your parents can buy at walgreen over the counter cause they make sure that you get enough for your size, kids need less than adults and more than what you need may hurt you. But that is why doctors/dentist go to college for 8 years to make sure they know everythign they need to know.

The pain won't go away, even if it does it's just temporarily, and later it will come back even worse.

There's no reason you should be scared of the dentist. I'm not a dentist and I don't know if your tooth needs to be pulled out. But I know that whatever the dentist will do it's not going to hurt more than it already does.

If you don't have your tooth treated now, trust me it's going to get worse. Maybe, it's not even that serious now, but if you leave the pain to go by itself, I assure you you'll get more pain later.

you can try swishing warm salty water around in your mouth this might ease the pain temporarily.

sounds like you have a cavity that has reached the nerve in your tooth.

Since you havnt gone to the dentist in awhile he will take x-rays of your mouth this will let him see exactly what is going on.
they wont pull it unless its really bad but if its just a cavity they will just drill out the decay and fill it. if the nerve is infected they might do a root canal which is basically removing the nerve from the tooth

Pray to God consistently while trying, as God helps those who help themselves rather than those who are lazy. Lord Krisna said in Bhagavad Gita, we have to carry out our works and renounce the fruit of our action. So we must keep trying and find joy in doing our work, whether or not we get the desired result. We should not lose hope. Do your best and leave the rest to God,it will all come right some day or night.

They will look into your mouth and at the tooth which is causing you pain. They will probably take an x-ray as well to see what is going on inside. they may give you antibiotics to get rid of the infection. Or they may treat the tooth there and than but they numb you first.

Good Luck
