Small Hondas and small Toyotas are the best to buy as used cars. Both brands hold up well over time, but the value of the used cars stays pretty high. So you have to pay a little more on the average.
If I were shopping for a used car and wanted the best "bang for my buck," I would by a two-year-old Kia Spectra or Kia Elantra, with less than 25,000 miles on it. They can lose as much as a third of their value in two years, you still get the 10 year and 100,000 mile warranty. You may also want to consider buying an extended warranty on the used car. Dealerships offer them. The AAA offers them, but you have to be a member to buy.
When you get close to choosing a car, you can go to Edmunds.com to check on values. You can also hire a mechanic, at a garage other than where you are buying a car, to inspect the car to make sure nothing is wrong with it.

No matter what used car you buy, the most important thing is how often the fluids and filters were changed over the lifetime of the car, and the type of driving the car was used for. If the same car had been driven mostly on high speed highways rather than around town in short trip stop and go traffic, then it might have twice as many miles on the odometer and still be in better condition than the low mileage around town car.

The usual choices are the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, but the Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix are good, economical cars with a solid repair history (unless the previous owner abused them). I would stay away from European Imports because their reliability is suspect and the parts and service are expensive. This is double for the Subaru as the exotic engines are difficult to service and all wheel driver sound nice until you have to get it repaired. Their fuel economy isn't that great either.

For college i think i would go with a honda... cuz a honda will last forever... well a long time. The economy of a brand of cars depends on it's features - the more features normally the less economy wise it is - I suggestion you research on the internet or go to a few dealerships and get literature on what YOU are interested in - GOOD LUCK!@
