It's trying to communicate back with you. I have three dogs. One gives me vacant looks when I talk...one wags his tail...and the other one makes noises back at me, or waits until he hears a word he recognizes and THEN starts "talking" to me.

There was an article that said dogs have about a 250 word vocabulary...people words they recognize. My "talking" dog has trained me to recognize HIS different sounds...I can hear a difference in when he wants a "cookie" and when he wants "food" or "out". Of course, he wants a "cookie" all the time, so that was an easy one....

If it is still young, it could be looking for attention or being playful.
Often, if you talk to dogs as the bark when they are young, they continue to bark when you talk to it throughout their years.
My rat terrier sing with me, and she enjoys it as much as any play session. :)

It is the tone of your voice. try talking differently and they shouldn't bark.
