There is a third world war. It is the Global War on Terror. The main players are the Taliban (extremist Muslim political group that was in power in Afghanistan) and the Saddam Bathist party of Iraq.
It also includes the terrorist group Al Qaeda headed by Osama Bin Laden - attacks against the US include multiple US Embassy bombings, blowing a hole and killing sailors on the US Cole, attacking NY World Trade Center(x2), The Pentagon, The White House (failed attack) and possibly involved in Somalia counter attack against US.

The current main players include the main coalition of Iraqi Government, US, England, Japan, Spain, Albania, South Korea, Italy and a few more.
Also Saudi Arabia - financing and providing soldiers to the Terrorists, but also assisting the coalition in capturing terrorists.
Iran and Syria providing weapons, ammo, money and soldiers to the Terrorists.

Related is Muslim Extremist vs. Jewish country of Israel. And Muslim extremists in Indonesia (Philippines and surrounding), Somalia are housing, training and attack preparation.

There are also Muslim extremists citizens of free countries of Canada, France, England that are planning and conducting terror attacks in North America and abroad.

Iran has publicly stated that Israel should be wiped from the face of the earth. They are now making nuclear material - weapons grade, but 'for peaceful purposes'. Once complete Israel is easily in range. (About 2-3 years till complete is what the newspaper estimates).

Cheers!

The third world war has already occurred. It was the Cold War. I believe we may be seeing the beginnings of the fourth world war. This war will revolve around terrorism, and the states which sponsor it. Contrary to the many who say that everyone will be against the USA, this will not happen. It is not in best interests of many nations to engage in war with the United States. While many of these nations may condemn our policies, at the end of the day this is as far as it will go. The United States is the cornerstone of the world economy, if we collapse the world will enter a deep depression that will make the 30's look like a cakewalk by comparison.

It is very possible that Korea or Iran could start major hostilities with a nuclear attack, but if they do this world derision would be turned on them. I believe what we will see in coming days is a conflict with Iran, it will involve Israel, Syria, Palestine and possibly Lebanon. From the Korean side, I think it is very likely that you may see hostilities with Japan.

Another area of potential concern is China and Taiwan, although I believe that as has happened in the past, this conflict will again be diverted, although the rhetoric may get very nasty in the coming weeks and months. This is due to our continued support of Taiwan, and their current bid for UN membership status. However, war is not in China's best interest from emerging economic standpoint.

Brittian, Germany, France, and Canada do not want war. They all have moderate economies, and a major world war would damage ties in the European Union with each country being forced to take sides.

Russia is concerned with their own internal struggles, and their debt load makes war an unwinnable prospect no matter who it is against. The only way Russia will engage in hostilities at this point is if they are backed into a corner.

Mexico cannot win in a global fight no matter who they back. The same is true for most of the Central and South American nations.

Good question. I would think that, in a nutshell, it would be Islamic Fanatics i.e.; Iran and all of the small groups they support against the free world. Then, other countries would be obligated to choose sides and that would be any communist countries like China, Korea, Cuba and a multitude of others or at least any with nuclear capabilities sending missiles to any free democratic countries like America, England, Israel and any number of countries they felt threatened by. Our main hope, I would think, would be that our space defense program and patriot missile systems would be able to eliminate most of the incoming missles in flight. But, that's a whole lot of hoping when you're talking about the number of weapons out there.
This is all assuming one considers WW3 to be only a nuclear confrontation. Many will say it's already underway, just no nuclear strikes yet.
And it's obvious who's against who right now.
Just as I said before... Islamic fanatics willing to kill off an entire civilization for the sake of some imaginary fairy tale religious absurdity.
I guess it's basically good vs. evil. What if we took all the efforts directed towards war and worked together as one world of one race of human beings. All of the sickness, poverty and suffering could be resolved instantly. How's that for a fairy tale? Too easy, I guess.

The Cold War was not WWIII because nothing happened.

Wars are no longer fought like they used to be. There are no battle lines.

In WWI, troops had to fight for every inch of ground. There were distinct front lines. Today, it's fought in cities all over so there are no clear front lines.

So if you want to lable it, WWIII started in 2001. Why were the other wars called world wars? Because it was more than just one country against another, just like now. The US and all of our allies are fighting against several countries.

We have declared war on terrorism. Terrorism is an idea, not a tangable thing and as long as there is government, there will be people who aren't happy with it. And as long as people aren't happy with it, there will be terrorism.

As for U.S vs China, I don't think it'll happen. We are too interdependant on each other. We are large trade allies, if one of us falls into economic termoil, the other will be hit just as hard.

I think I am answering this question second time. Any way if there is a third world war (for some it will be 4th world war, 3rd was the cold war) it will be between Israel and its allies (America and other western countries) against all the Muslim countries East to Israel, pakistan, Afganistan, Gulf countires, Turkmenisan, Azerbeijan, Kazakistan, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iran you name it. According to Jews , every one of them will rejoin back in Israel and rebuild the jewish temple which was destroyed twice during babylonian and Roman invasion. To build this temple back , they have to destroy AKSA , the third important Mosque for Muslims(they belive Nabi was ressurected from here). All muslim nations will attack Israel once they do this. This is known as Armagadeon war or War with weapons of Mass destruction: Nuclear war. Got it now young Chappy

it truly is a ill question, presuming warfare to be the in straightforward words way! in case you've been the pres of the most efficient usa contained in the international you've adequate elements to: purchase from different international places; to institute a software of clinical & technological progression that could provide your usa with more effective water than you're able to ever want. i'd not commence a warfare, warfare is a negative & detrimental ingredient that once began takes on a existence of its own & is insatiable for human existence. P.S. the most efficient usa contained in the international is at present the U. S.. they have lots of water & in the adventure that they did not the position could they get it from, Canada? Mexico? No i don't believe of so, they could favor to apply technology & technologies to desalinate sea water which surrounds them. As they're experiencing salt an infection of groundwater in some elements of the U. S., now can be a reliable time to commence yet initiating a warfare wont help. at the same time as there from time to time may be reliable causes for utilizing military stress, there is under no circumstances a reliable reason behind initiating a warfare.

Most wars, large and small, are nothing more than violent competition for limited resources (oil, land, food, lumber, etc.) Therefore most likely WW3 would be fought, ultimately, between the largest competitors for such resources. Probably China and/or Russia against U.S./Western Europe.
