Yes, then they tend to repel after a while also.
We're naturally attracted to those who "complement" us and round out our own qualities, or subconsciously we want someone who has qualities we'd also like to have.
But then living with someone who's the opposite of you can get irritating after a while. Why? Because you realize they're so different...

I don't think so. To be honest, I think the opposite is more to the truth.
Imagine two people completely different:
one sportive, active the other the couch-potato him/herself.
One intelligent, the other... less intelligent.
One liberal, the other a friend of communism.
One deeply religious, the other atheist.
One outgoing, extrovert, the other introvert.
I think we are more attracted to people which have similar
backgrounds and interests than ourselves.
At least, this is true for me. My gf needs to be similarly
intelligent than I am - if she is more or less intelligent, we
couldn't have these enlighting conversations which broadens
our both horizon.
If she is active and outgoing, I would spend too much time home alone.
Of course being different (not a copy of oneself) is important, and it makes a relationship so much fun. But I don't think opposites attract too much.

it's not really their being opposites, per se, that attract two people together. in the first place, all individuals are unique and therefore whether we like it or not..we all are different. so its not whether two people are opposite or not that brings them together...but more of the way they relate to each other and their ability to bridge a gap between their differences. now that's what brings two people together no matter how different they are.
