I've got a border collie and he's brilliant. Loyal, intelligent, energetic and great with the kids. Can be a bit wary of strangers, though, and, unfortunately, has perfected his puppy dog eyes so can just about get away with anything.

I couldn't begin to tell you the "best" dog for -you-...
However my favorites include the following:

- German Shepherd Dog (Usually a good companion for any owner, just make sure you exercise this dog a lot. I would consider this dog a medium large to large breed.)

- Border Collie (Not the best beginner dog in my opinion. They are very high energy...and please don't take "very" lightly. However, if you were to choose this dog, you should definitely train the dog in sports like Agility, Herding, Obedience etc. These dogs are one of the best competition dogs in my opinion. Medium sized dog.)

-American Pitbull/Staffordshire Terrier (Everyone has very different and very strong opinions about this breed. In my case, I simply adore them. I think they make wonderful companions and a great life long buddy. If you choose to check into this breed, make SURE you check the regulations around you as to see if they are ban/on the verge of being ban. In my opinion, these dogs don't deserve the banning...but you would still have to check into your regulations. These dogs are best housed by themselves. This can be anywhere from a medium sized dog to a medium large.)

-American Bulldog (I've had experience with this breed in the past and I wouldn't tell a beginner to go out and get one. They are one of the most stubborn, protective dogs you could ever find - but once you form a bond with them, they are one of the most loyal and trainable. These dogs are relatively expensive from a breeder and I would STRONGLY advise you to buy from a WELL searched/sought out breeder. Large sized.)

I hope the above may help you to narrow down some of the breeds of dogs you had in mind. Just remember, the above are only some of my favorites - you have to find the dog that is right for -you-.

Depends on so many factors- are you at home most of the day or at work? Fenced yard? Apartment or house? Allergic or not allergic? Do you have children? If so- what ages? Will you be traveling alot? Do you want to take a dog along with you? Google your question and you'll find helpful questionaires to help you narrow your choices. Personally? I love golden retrievers- smart, beautiful, loving, gentle but they DO shed alot even if you take time to groom regularly. And they need your time and company as pups to get settled in nicely and trained.

i assume you are planning to get a dog for a pet.dogs are great companions.many people believe that a labrador retriever must be the first dog in a family. it's very intelligent, friendly, smart dog.and what more.. it is a great retriever and a good companion, guards well,a fitting new member in any family. But yes, they need a good amount of exercise to keep them active else they tend to put on weight easily.if you are alone, and need a rough and tough companion, a german sheaperd or a boxer can come good. rottweillers are more ferocious and one-man dogs.so a lab seems to strike a good balance.

Boxer

I just bought one myself and he is great.

Boxers are energetic (not excessivly though) so they love to play, they are extremely smart which makes training them so much easier, they are very gentle with kids, they are protective of their family and they are just cute as heck.

They get to be about 70 lbs which isn't small but it's not huge either. They really should be indoor dogs though. Their snouts are short so they have a hard time breathing in the heat and they don't have a good enough coat to protect them in the winter.

Many people have described them as the worlds biggest lap dog. They are very affectionate and crave to be near their owners.

I would have to see a mutt. It's the best of both world. I had a mutt when I was little, who was half husky, collie and German Shepherd. All three of those dog traits really makes a dog special.

It does depend. But i think the best dog to have is a Toy Maltese. I have one, he is so adorable and he likes to cuddle and he is always there to keep me company.

The best dog to have is...a cat. My cat Murphy weighs more than many dogs, and he is adorable, loving, playful, fun and knows how to use the litterpan!
