I'm also interested in the area around 32 Howard Street, a hotel I'm planning to stay in. What's it like? Both places are in downtown Toronto.

Pembroke street is right behind Gearge street where the largest homeless shelter in Northamerica is. It is a drug riddled area with a lot of crime. That on Pembroke is used by hookers and other homeless. There are very few actual trvelers hostels in Toronto. I advise a hotel or drive out to Kingston Rd. in Scarborough and get a cheap motel. The odd hokker and John driving in but alot safer than where you are looking. I work for the City at the Hostel for over 6 years. Trust me it's not worth the risk.

My sister says that Pembroke Street is on the border of Moss Park - not a good area at all. As for Howard Street, it's a little bit further north, just south of Bloor Street. Also not the greatest area according to my sister. I would suggest Kingston Road as well for a nicer hotel or pay a bit more and go over into Yorkville area which is basically, Bloor and Yonge area.

The offical name of the area is Cabbagetown, and is in the Sherborne and Dundas area, both hotels are safe and have TTC stops near by or right at the door.

It is not best area but is open and not as bad as previouslt stated, I live for 3 years on Ontario Street and you are a few blocks east of Yonge St and the Eaton Center.
