I know English, French, Japanese, and Hebrew, as well as Java, HTML, and C++. All but the first were self-taught...and unfortunately I've had very little opportunity to use any of the non-computer languages (except English, of course).

I speak Dutch, well, because I'm Dutch. Same goes for the local dialect.
German because we used to vacation there, and when I was a kid there was more German than Dutch television. Actually, that's still true... Only had it for one year in school.
English, first learned it in highschool, took an extra business English course, and married an American.
French I just learned in school, only used it incidentally on vacation and for business. Basic but understandable.
Spanish i thought myself via a television course before a five week vacation to Spain some years ago. Very basic, but it gets me what I want.
Picked up some Italian on vacation, and because if the similarity with Spanish.
Languages fascinate me, I have a collection of some 300 dictionaries from all over, and I seriously plan to improve my skills and learn at least one other lanhuage. Japanese is tempting, and I do have a complete course for it at home...

English, because that's where I was brought up.
German, because I now live in Germany.
i had to learn French at school, and remember very little about it. It is better to learn a language by hanging around native speakers of the language and watching as much TV and listening to the radio as you can. The first 6 - 12 months will be hell, but if you stick with it, you will pick it up easier after that.

One - English. I can still carry on a basic conversation in Spanish and French from high school study (many years ago)but I sound worse than a child. I can read them both well but I am not so good with coversational use.
